At Sean Clancy School of Modern Guitar you can be assured of high quality guitar tuition in an informal and fun style.
For anybody to play the instrument they have to play from the inside out. Practice becomes like a challenge to get awesome. Exercises and phrases are practiced and pushed to the limit of human known ability and beyond.
My students have always had good results. Whether they are getting their rhythm playing and chord knowledge together or just wanting to shred, they have reached their goals faster.
16 years of teaching has shown me how to get from A to B on guitar in the shortest amount of time. Personal advancement will depend on the student’s motivation and hunger to become the best guitarist they can be.
Absolutely! I take complete beginners to very advanced. I took two friends (2 separate lessons). One was so small he could hardly reach the end of the guitar (they were both 9 years old) – the other played bass – both beginners. Within 2 months they understood timing well and were playing “Like a Stone” by Audioslave (including the Solo) and sounding good! One other student liked the lessons so much; he baked a cake for my birthday.
I have great software available to help you get better, faster at practice time. We can whip up backing tracks for you to practice with in no time. Bring along a re-writable CD or DVD to store your backing tracks. I have tones of popular guitar backing tracks of guitar songs such as "The Loner" (Gary Moore), "Hotel California" (The Eagles) and "I am a Viking" (Yngwie Malmsteen). “Sight Reader” for the Guitar and Bass Guitar will make you able to read music – even if you never did before! We’ll make full use of technology to save you hours of wasted practice time!
Special Bonus: after 10 lessons, you get "SightReader for Guitar", "SightReader for Bass", Learn to Burn:The Guitar Speed Manual E-book", "How to be awesome at Jazz Guitar Chords (finally!)" E-book, Prolevelguitar Naturalizer all free! (priced at $150 (nz))
All the theory is practically applicable – we learn something and then we how to use it in our music. Chord and scale building. I will teach you why things work – rather than just things. First thing is to establish a good foundation which involves developing great timing and chord construction. You will learn how to pick music up by ear. How to improvise. Which scales go with each chord. There are plenty of options available: Sight-Reading, Jazz Chords, strumming, Shredding, composition, how to play well in a studio situation. You will learn the songs you want to learn (this is great as it makes you want to practice!)
Even if Guitar is just your hobby – I will get you to a professional level where you will sound good! How fast you get there is up to your commitment to your craft!
Lessons carry on through School Holidays. This is often when school being out provides larger practice times and the ability to advance in playing skill! If a trip away is arranged, please talk with me shortly before the vacation.
If you miss a lesson and don’t let me know at least 3 hours in advance – you will be billed for the lesson. Also, try not to be late – if you arrive 10 minutes late, your lesson will finish at the time it does if you were there on time.
However – If I miss your lesson (you turn up and I am not there and have not let you know in advance), you get a free lesson!
The first lesson is a $10 introduction lesson - after all - you want to make sure that I can actually play and check out the tools we will be using to make you awesome! The fees afterwards are $35 for ½ an hour. Four lessons are paid up front. This is a bond. This goes into a bank account and if you miss a lesson without letting me know at least 3 hours in advance, the fee will be extracted from the bond. You pay 35 for each lesson - this keeps you in 4 lessons in advance. If you decide that you would like to end lessons, you can work out the remaining lessons you have in reserve.
Guitar Curriculum – Sean Clancy School of Modern Guitar
Timing
|
Professional Guitarists can play all things they play in time. Timing is the guitarist’s greatest foe. This study will make timing your strength. |
Strumming studies and finger picking. |
Rhythm work is 90% of all songs. If you want to be good at guitar, you’ll want to be able to use your timing and strumming work to be second nature. |
Barre Chords |
Being able to play any chord at any time will require you to master barre chords. It’s great for index finger strength too! |
Scale Theory |
Scale theory is ridiculously easy – made complicated by the plethora of guitar books on the market (not including Learn to Burn). Scale theory will help you to get particular sounds on your guitar, help you compose, help you analyse and magnify your soloing power! |
Chord theory |
Also very, very easy. Knowing how chords work will help you with all the above. You will become a musician and not only a guitarist. |
Bending |
This increases hand strength. It also adds nuances that the guitar is known for. This also covers vibrato. |
Scale Exercises |
This will make your fingers stronger, agile, synchronized and faster. Chances are you will be able to use these exercises in your playing. |
Sequence studies Scales. |
These studies do exactly the same as exercises. They are more melodic and they help you to learn your scales. Good rock and blues soloing is built on grouping sequences together. Bach was a big fan of sequences. |
Sweep picking |
This covers large intervals on adjacent strings with little effort. We will work to integrate seamlessly with alternate picking. Great for arpeggios and makes your soloing more interesting. |
Ornamentation |
Trills, grace notes, instant bends, appoggiatura, slides – all make your guitar playing interesting. |
Articulation |
To get great sounds out of your guitar requires good pick technique and finger placement. By default, you want to only hear notes – not miscellaneous sounds. |
Learning Licks. |
Soloing is built of phrases which are strung together. Different licks require different techniques. Depending of your ability on the fundamentals, you will find them easy or not. Working hard on a lick, however, will increase your ability in it’s component techniques. |
Incredible Technique | There's more to incredible technique than just playing fast and clean. It also covers bending to position changing as well. See it done right in front of you and get the tips - from someone who can actually do it! |
Learning Songs. |
There is a lot you can pick up from a song if you learn it right through. Emulating master players can help you gain control of your own sound (when you come to make it). Learning songs that you like will make you want to practice. |
Coaching |
It’s hard to play and listen to yourself at once. Using a teacher (namely me) will help you get to the ability you want to be in less time. You also want to be coached by somebody who can do all the things you need to learn. |
Sight-Reading |
After 10 lessons, you will receive a package of my software – including “Sight-Reader” – which hands down is the best program for learning to sight-read available. |
Ear-training. |
Using your ear will help you to play, learn and analyse music. Music is a listening art – the better your ear, the better you are. |
Performance |
Playing in front of somebody (namely me) will get you ready for playing in front of thousands. You need to access all your abilities without conscious thought. |
